What is addiction?

Addiction or substance use disorder is a complex brain condition characterized by the uncontrolled use of harmful or illicit substances. Continuous use of substances or alcohol has negative consequences on health. An individual loses functionality in day-to-day life. Almost 21 million Americans start substance use at the young age of 12 and only 10 percent receive treatment.

Some common Substances that cause addiction

Although there are various types of addiction, such as gaming, gambling, or sex addiction, typically the term “Addiction” is used for substance use or alcohol addiction. The most common substances that cause addiction are;

  • Alcohol
  • Heroin
  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine (Meth or Ice)
  • Fentanyl
  • OxyContin
  • Vicodin
  • Percocet
  • Xanax

Signs and Symptoms of drug addiction

Many individuals who suffer from addiction will show signs or symptoms like, loss of interest in normal activities, lack of self-control, cravings, loss of job, income or home, changes in their sleeping and eating patterns. The individual might experience feeling hot or cold irrespective of the weather. They might struggle with the inability to concentrate or carrying out major tasks. There is a noticeable change in their behavior like stealing things to support their addiction, agitation or isolation.  Someone experiencing addiction may suffer from permanent health complications over time, lose their self- control or will-power.

How does addiction affect your life?

Addiction can affect your life in many ways. It not only affects your physical health but it also affects your mental health and wellbeing. Your daily life is disrupted, interpersonal problems occur and your relationships with family members and friends might feel strained. The lack of emotional response from the addict can make it difficult for family members or friends. Regency Recovery & Wellness offers family therapy included in the individual’s tailor-made program to help mend these relationships.

An individual struggling with substance and/ or alcohol abuse will experience cycles of relapse if the person has not completed a treatment program or a strong recovery support system. The addict cannot overcome this disease without being properly treated by trained professionals to address all issues including underlying problems. In our experience, an individual trying to quit “Cold-Turkey” is not just dangerous, the likelihood of quitting successfully is non-existent because the issues that caused the individual to start using or abusing hasn’t been addressed. It is imperative the person takes it step by step to really have a clear understanding of addiction, how it affects them personally and to learn the tools and skills needed to have a successful recovery and wellness journey.

Prolonged use of alcohol and/ or a substance may cause harmful changes in the brain. The changes that might occur involve, judgment, learning, memory, decision making, and behavior.  It can also change the way you look on the outside. You may experience hair loss, weight loss or gain and even loss of teeth.

Do men and women respond differently to addiction?

Yes, both genders exhibit different addictive behaviors. Studies have shown that men are more susceptible to addiction. Generally due to peer pressure and low self-esteem. While women abuse drugs or alcohol to overcome psychological trauma or stress. Men are also more likely to experience intense withdrawal symptoms when compared to a woman. Men are more likely to start abusing drugs or alcohol at an earlier age than women. Women will typically use prescription drugs to satisfy cravings, while men are more inclined to use alcohol and/or Marijuana. Men also tend to develop anti-social personality traits at a higher rate than some women. Studies have also showed that men can maintain abstinence for a longer period than women.

Types of Drugs

There are 4 main categories in which illicit and prescribed drugs are classified. These drugs are classified by their chemical similarities and the effects they may have on the brain and body.

  1. Stimulants

Stimulant is a blanket term that refers to drugs that increase activity in the central nervous system and the body, drugs that are pleasurable and invigorating, or a drug that produces physiological effects characteristic of the sympathetic nervous system by promoting stimulation of the sympathetic nerves. Stimulants can increase alertness, attention, and energy by raising the levels of key chemicals in the brain and other parts of the body. The most common stimulants we see are Cocaine, Amphetamines, Methamphetamine and Crack. Due to the increase of dopamine levels, these drugs are highly addictive. While these drugs may seem harmless, they can cause serious side effects like hallucinations, paranoia, psychosis, agitation, restlessness, insomnia, headaches, increased blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and blood sugar.

  1. Depressants

Depressants are a drug that lowers neurotransmission levels to slow down or reduce arousal or stimulation in several different areas of the brain. These drugs affect the central nervous system by slowing down messages from the brain to the body. Some of the more common depressants are Alcohol, Benzodiazepines, GHB and Kava. Depressants are also referred to as “downers”. Depressants can be useful when treating anxiety, panic or panic attacks and sleep disorders. However, the down side to this category are the side effects such as; impaired judgment and coordination, vomiting, irregular or shallow breathing, blackouts and memory loss and unconsciousness.

  1. Opioids

Opioids are substances that attach to proteins called opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain, spinal cord, gut and other parts of the body. The opioids block pain messages sent from the body to the brain. Some of the more familiar opiates are Heroin, OxyContin, Vicodin, Morphine, Fentanyl and Methadone. Opioids are prescribed to treat pain. With drawn out use, pain-relieving effects will lessen and can even make the pain become worse.  Common side effects or symptoms of prolonged use of opiates include, sedation, constipation, physical dependance, tolerance, respiratory depression and uncontrollable cravings.

  1. Hallucinogens

A Hallucinogen is a chemical substance like a psychoactive agent, psychopharmaceutical or a psychotropic drug that changes the nervous system function and results in alterations in mood, cognition, perceptual anomalies. It creates substantial subjective changes in thought and emotion. These drugs are more commonly known as LSD, DMT, PCP and Ketamine. Hallucinogens have been used to treat diseases associated with perceptual distortions such as, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar and dementia. The issue with hallucinogens are the effects. The drug can be highly unpredictable. The amount ingested coupled with the user’s personality, mood and surroundings determines how your “trip” will happen. Long term use of hallucinogens can cause persistent psychosis and flashbacks, paranoia, disorganized thinking and sometimes even strokes and brain tumors.
